Tour of Britain Summer 2019

As part of the Summer Holidays, I took in a Tour of Britain. During this trip I visited Wales, the South of England, London, The Lake District and Scotland.

Before taking the ferry from Dublin to Holyhead I got a nice few photos in Howth where there was an beautiful sunset. These twin boats caught my attntion.

Llanddwyn Island Conical Tower as the sun rose in the early morning. The weather was stunning, the silence was was even more impressive and i could have stayed out on Lllanddwyn Island for hours. Plenty of shots were taken but I was back on the road again for 7am after a 40 minute walk back to the carpark. A slice of paradise and a highly recommended location. Be careful though, as the high tide can cut people off from the mainland for an hour or two.

I travelled down through Wales into Hereford to snap the cathedral, back to Tintern Abbey, The Severn Bridge, Bristol, Bath and then south to Dorset. Dorsetand the Jurassic Coast is going to get another visit as I was most impressed by this area. It deserves several days but I didn’t quite have that time. I arrived at Durdle Door Beach at 9am paid £8 to park and was told by the 4 parking wardens that i had 1 hour before the carpark was closed for the night. With the beach 10 minutes away I raced and took over 100 photos (some longer exposures at the is venue.

Next stop after the Lake District was Scotland. After Edinburgh and Glasgow, I was disappointed with Glencoe…..there wasn’t enough water but the Glenfinnan Viaduct didn’t disappoint. I had 2 cameras set up on 2 tripods with a cable release in either hand. I thought the Sony A7R3 would out shoot the Canon 5D Mk3. But it didn’t. Of the 73 shots I took of this train crossing the viaduct, 39 were from the Canon. I was afraid that i wouldn’t get a shot of the Harry Potter train. I was in situe an hour and a half before the train arrived and I had a prime shooting spot. There were plenty of others on the hillside also.

Despite the incredible amount of midges at the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye, I managed to get a few decent shots. The midges in the early evening cleared the crowd and though I had a mosquito hat on (very unfashionable) the midges managed to annoy me to distraction for the 2.5 hours I spent shooting the different pools. I could barely see the screen at the back of the camera as there were so many on my netting and on the back of the camera. Stand still for 30 seconds and you were mobbed.

The Quaring in Northern Skye is a very exciting and interesting place. It is also visited quite a lot by tourists. As I was there in the middle of the day i had to find something different to deaden the strong sun. When you pay a flying visit to places you just snap what conditions you are given. It is impossible to be at every location for sunset or sunrise (providing that there actually is a sunrise/sunset)

Donegal 2019

Donegal is such a super county, I had to get back. That opportunity arrived in April 2019. When my travel partner fell out the excellent photographer Sean Beagan stepped in and it was great to meet up with Sean who lives in Derry. Once again we started in the South and worked northwards. Here are some of the shots.

Arriving at the Great Pollet Sea Arch on the final morning the weather was poor but the sea was active and so i was able to get a creamy feel with a long exposure. Access to this wonderful landmark is blocked by a stubborn farmer. Thankfully Donegal Council and an Bord Pleanala are putting in an access route for the public to go and see this remarkable Arch. I had to walk around the headlands and cliffsides away from the farm to shoot this.

This is my favourite photograph that I have ever taken. I have a large copy hanging up in my front hallway. This was at the very end of the shoot just when you felt the sun might be getting too strong and a 1.2 Reverse Grad was used to try and control the power of the sun. So far it has proved very successful for me. It has been chosen for the MS Calendar for 2020 and I expect more from it in the different calendar and photography competitions it has been entered into.

Paris, February 2019

We got great weather in Paris for the 5 day shoot there. Paris is one city that doesn’t lack for shooting opportunities although the Police presence often hampered access and the photographing of certain attractions as there were lots of protests on-going.

But it was worth it. A change of clothes is always important when seascape shooting and thankfully I had plenty older clothes to change into later.

This was a bye the way 5 second shot while waiting for John to finish shooting and it turned out to be one of my favourite shots of the 3 day shoot. It is of a seastack to the left as you look seaward to the more famous Crohy Head Arch.

West Waterford/Cork & Kerry Photobinge

Having more time over the Summer helps get out more and the beautiful Summer and the longer evenings repaid us all in kind. Following several visits to West Cork with Darren Lane, I set off on the August Bank Holiday weekend not realising that my weekend would turn into a 5 day photobinge. It was great to meet up with great photogrphers like Darren Lane, Mark O Brien, Gavin Byrne and Frank Brady. First stop was Ardmore and then on to Camden Fort in Crosshaven.

The amazing and wonderful Fastnet Lighthouse built in 1904 and the second lighthouse to be built on this rock. When it was first constructed, there were two lighthouses standing side by side until they dismantled the older lighthouse. It was removed because of fears that the power of the sea could snap the neck of the old lighthouse in a storm as happened to an identical lighthouse on Calf Island off of the Beara Peninsula. These were great men who used granite blocks to build this amazing architectural feat and not one worker was killed or ecen injured in its making.

Having been told by Met Eirinn that there would be a sunny start to the day, several of the Fastnet group including Mark, Frank and I met up with Darren Lane at Guagane Barra but once again the sun eluded us there. However the lake was dead calm and as a bonus, Frank pointed out The Tailor’s grave in the graveyard on the lakeside. The Tailor, Tim Buckley, is a great character who lived in the area over a 80 years ago and was made even more famous by Eric Cross in his book, ‘The Tailor and Ansty’ which I had been reading at the time.

Following Guagane Barra Darren Lane and myself went shooting in Mid-Cork. This was one shot I took at Lough Allua near Ballingeary. Whoever would paint a boat pink!! The lake was dead calm.

West Cork Trip, June 2018

Well the John Kealy (aka the Quare Fella)  and myself were back on the road again. This time it was a culture trip for him to The Rebel County. What I love about West Cork is the beautiful vistas (both landscape and seascape), the rugged nature and the silence!

Sheeps Head Lighthouse. Plenty of grass in the middle of the road to get to the car park which is a 25 minute walk from the Lighthouse. Fantastic views from Sheeps Head.

Antrim April 2018 - Causeway Coast

Pat Whelan and I tripped North for a weekend and it turned out to be the best road trip in a while. The weather was ideal and our pre-arranged itinerary worked a treat. We got ideal conditions and covered fierce ground shooting for 16 hours a day over a range of locations in Antrim and Derry.

Berlin February 2018

Following our highly publicised and controversial tour, the Odd Fella and I were back on the road for another eventful road trip. This time we only flew to one country - Germany and not 3 or 4 as had happened on the Prague outing. Plenty of photos were taken and here are a few.

I set up the Facebook group 'Beautiful Cork Images' in January 2018. I was shooting a lot in Cork and I could not find an appropriate Cork Facebook Group to post modern day photographs on. Once it was set up, visits were made each weekend to different parts of Cork. Here are some of those shots.

December found me in Lisbon. It was very bright for the 3 days spent there and not a cloud was seen in the sky. It was lovely to walk around in but not great for photography. Here are a few shots from the trip.

Kilcoe Castle between Skibbereen and Ballydehob overlooking Roaringwater Bay is the home of Jeremy Irons. He's a man I met outside Cotter's Pub on a weekend session on Cape Clear 20 years ago and we discussed the alcoholic drinking habits of his dog who was in his company at the time. The Castle is on an island connected to the mainland via a short stone bridge. The field I was standing in is also their field and the clouds are gathering over Mount Gabriel which overlooks Schull and Roaringwater Bay.

August road trip to Kerry

I was on the road again earlier this month. Destination: Kerry. In particular the Dingle Peninsula and later Killarney. The Dingle Peninsula is a wonder part of the country. A wild Atlantic with a scenic back drop lends for good photography despite the mixed weather. Unfortunately Killarney's weather was awful. Therefore, smooth lakes, sunny mountain scenes and appropriate light were completely absent with wind and driving rain prevailing. But as photographers know, those are the breaks.

Trip to Antrim

Last week I tripped to the beautiful County Antrim. It's not a county that you would put in that category but there are lots of picturesque places and coastlines from Belfast bay all the way to stunning North Antrim coast with lots going on in between. Below are just a few shots I took there.
