The weather was stunning, the silence was was even more impressive and i could have stayed out on Lllanddwyn Island for hours. After Edinburgh and Glasgow, I was disappointed with Glencoe…..there wasn’t enough water but the Glenfinnan Viaduct didn’t disappoint. I had 2 cameras set up on 2 tripods with a cable release in either hand. I thought the Sony A7R3 would out shoot the Canon 5D Mk3. But it didn’t. Of the 73 shots I took of this train crossing the viaduct, 39 were from the Canon. I was afraid that i wouldn’t get a shot of the Harry Potter train. I was in situe an hour and a half before the train arrived and I had a prime shooting spot. The midges in the early evening cleared the crowd and though I had a mosquito hat on (very unfashionable) the midges managed to annoy me to distraction for the 2.5 hours I spent shooting the different pools. I could barely see the screen at the back of the camera as there were so many on my netting and on the back of the camera. Access to this wonderful landmark is blocked by a stubborn farmer. Thankfully Donegal Council and an Bord Pleanala are putting in an access route for the public to go and see this remarkable Arch. The plan was to rise at 5.30am to check the sky. I have a large copy hanging up in my front hallway. This was at the very end of the shoot just when you felt the sun might be getting too strong and a 1.2 Reverse Grad was used to try and control the power of the sun. When it was first constructed, there were two lighthouses standing side by side until they dismantled the older lighthouse. It was removed because of fears that the power of the sea could snap the neck of the old lighthouse in a storm as happened to an identical lighthouse on Calf Island off of the Beara Peninsula. He's a man I met outside Cotter's Pub on a weekend session on Cape Clear 20 years ago and we discussed the alcoholic drinking habits of his dog who was in his company at the time. The Castle is on an island connected to the mainland via a short stone bridge.
